Mario Kart DS Review- Stupid Blue Shells

Ah, Mario Kart. Have we ever gone through a Nintendo system's lifespan without seeing one? Nope. Mario Kart has kept gamers hooked for years by keeping the same, classic formula while adding something new and exciting. And it seems like Mario Kart DS is part of that trend, too.

The plot is that Mario needs some money so he can buy a Nintendo 3DS, and he decides to race some dudes and win a gold trophy that he'll sell on eBay, but Bowser steals it, so he needs to catch Bowser. LOL JK.

The graphics of Mario Kart DS are something common of Nintendo-made games: vivid colors. While the development team probably worked as hard as they could on the graphics, they were most likely restricted by the DS' limited graphical capabilities. I'm not saying the graphics are bad, I'm just saying they're pure garbage compared to the graphics of PSP games. (I'm not a Sony fanboy, I'm a Nintendo fanboy.)

The gameplay of Mario Kart DS is like the gameplay of other games in the series: race around the tracks faster than CPUs so you can win the Grand Prix. One huge improvement was the addition of online multiplayer, a first in the series. A gripe about the gameplay is the addition of blue shells. If you don't know what the infamous blue shells are, they're pretty much Nintendo's way of making the noobs feel like superstars.

The music and sound effects are really good. The sound effects are nice, and there are some old, nostalgic tunes, as well as some new, catchy tunes. So whatever you're judging, sound effects or music, you'll hear lots of praise.

The controls for Mario Kart DS are pretty basic: A= Accelerate, B= Brakes, D-Pad= move, and R/X= use item. Trust me, if a kid can easily play Mario Kart DS, so can you.
Pros:
  • Online Multiplayer!!!
  • Easy Controls
  • Good Soundtrack
Cons:
  • The infamous noob-protecting BSoD (Blue Shell of Death/Doom)

Overall: 9.5/10
